Mole Home Remedies: Do they Really Work?

The pros at Northwest Mole Pros have many years of experience humanely eliminating moles for the homeowners of north King and south Snohomish Counties. We eliminate hundreds of moles annually, and doing so is how we earn our living. So, we know a thing or two about moles!

One question NW Mole Pros often hear is, ‘Will (fill-in-the-blank) help get rid of my moles?’ You can fill in the blank with any number of home and commercial mole remedies that claim to get results.  A quick Google search will produce a laundry list of both types of remedies, and here’s a partial rundown. Have you heard any of these?

The lowdown on home or commercial mole remedies:

Home Mole Remedies:  granted, they’re inexpensive and easy to use. And they make you feel like you’re taking action.  NW Mole Pros recommendation:  don’t waste precious time and money on ineffective home mole remedies.

You may see some ‘progress’ in your fight, e.g., ‘surface mole activity’ stops.  But surface activity can be misleading. There can be much mole activity in the early stages of an infestation. That’s when they are setting up house, and there’s lots of surface hustle-bustle. But once the moles settle in, and their excavation work is done, there is far less surface activity, but they’re still there going about their business, maintaining their tunnels below the surface.  Therefore, surface activity is not a fool-proof indicator for the presence of moles.

Commercial Mole Remedies:  these are not the mole remedies you hear about from Uncle Roy; these have radio ads and fancy store displays and glossy packaging.  They make claims that sound legit and are harder to debunk.  NW Mole Pros uses one question to help us sort through the claims – How do you know if they are working?  If it’s lack of surface activity, we have already laid that bit of ‘evidence’ to rest.

In fact, there’s only one commercial mole remedy that gives you real proof of effectiveness beyond lack of surface activity – a mole trap. Therefore, NW Mole Pros recommends mole traps; they’re the only commercial mole remedy that offers you concrete proof of effectiveness – a mole carcass. Bottom line, no commercial mole solution is worth your time and effort except a mole trap.

So, once again, we know that surface mole activity is not a reliable indicator. NW Mole Pros would not recommend any home or commercial mole solution that relies on surface activity as their sole proof of effectiveness.

That, friends, leaves us with traps; they are the only effective method for mole control.  However, even the optimal solution will have its pros and cons, which NW Mole Pros has listed below:

Pros and Cons for the use of traps to control moles

Mole Trap Pros      Mole Trap Cons
Proven history of being effective in the control of moles Requires skill and practice setting to become effective
Low to moderate cost – typically $15-30 each How and where to set are not well defined – internet is questionable source.  There is a learning curve.
Durable – typically good for multiple years or seasons Most properties benefit from using 4 to 5 devices not just 1
Proof of effectiveness is physical carcass Without practice, sets may take 15-20 minutes each
Sets should be checked at least once per week
Capture rates < 25% are not uncommon
May have local/state restrictions on their use

Mole Traps: Most Effective, but also a Chore

We have put the home and commercial mole remedies through their paces. The clear winner is the mole trap. So now, go out and buy some traps – not one, but two or three or five. Figure out the optimal location for them. Be sure to set them where they can’t endanger your pets, kids, or friendly critters. And be prepared to deal with a mole carcass should you nab one.

And if that clearly effective mole solution ALSO sounds like a chore, well, it CAN be for the average homeowner.
