Mole Control: Understand the Battle, Part 1

Mole control tactics change monthly!

Northwest Mole Pros wants to know: do you understand mole control, how mole behavior changes during the season, and how to deal with them? If there was a part of your lawn maintenance and beautification routine that was actually making your mole problem worse, would you even realize it? Things to consider as we take a stroll together through a typical mole season...

Mole Control: Your Calendar Calls to Action

Most homeowners have an annual sequence of activities to maintain and beautify their homes.  Little do they know that these actions may be adding to their mole infestation problems.  We are not recommending you stop your maintenance and beautification efforts, but we are suggesting you may need to employ some countermeasures to keep a mole infestation at-bay.  Let’s jump into the annual calendar and identify possible countermeasures.

Mole Control, February through May

This is the annual reproductive time-cycle for moles.  In February and early March female sows come into heat and male boars are on the move looking for sows.  The result is an increased activity with the resulting mounds and veining in lawns and beds.  The homeowner has just started their winter cleanup - fertilizing lawns and adding compost and/or mulch to their beds.  The good news, the homeowner is in their yard and more likely to see new activity.  The bad news, they have just added mulch and compost which means any new activity is harder to see.

Mole Countermeasures, February through May

Once a week walk your entire yard looking for signs of veining or mounds.  If unsure about the activity, flatten it with your foot and give it closer inspection next week.  If there are any signs of activity, nows the time to act.  You want the numbers on your side, yep that means killing the female marauders before they give birth to a litter of 3-5 pups.  Trust us, a little countermeasure now has the potential for huge payback in June.
